Cape Coral Boat Locks and Boat Lifts.

PAGE 19 of Cape Coral Waterfront Guide section

Here is an overview of the City’s boat locks and lifts locations and characteristics:

locks and lifts UPDATED02

The lock in the SW corner of the city is a man-operated large lock.  Many of the cities widest canals lie behind this lock (up to 250 feet wide), as well as some of the cities most expensive homes. Cape Harbour lies just behind this lock, and offers one of Cape Corals best marina locations (wet and dry slips). It contains a large portion of the city’s largest Yachts.

The lock is known as the Chiquita lock, though you might hear it referred to as the Spreader Canal lock too.  It can handle boats up to 65 feet in length and 19 feet wide.  Due to it’s size, multiple boats at a time can typically enter simultaneously.  Because it is man operated it is not operated in the middle of the night. However, Cape Harbour has a restaurant (Rumrunners) with pull-aside dockage just outside the lock, so you wouldn’t be left stranded should you show up too late.  For exact operating hours you can call the lock master at 239-542-5661.

A map of the areas behind the Chiquita lock is included to the right.

NW Cape Coral North Spreader Waterway Boat Lift:

UPDATE: THE FOLLOWING NW CAPE CORAL  LOCK HAS BEEN REMOVED BY THE CITY and the following is no longer a hindrance!

Towards the NW corner (by Matlacha) is a boat lift.  Actually as of writing this, the area beside the lift is washed out and you can bypass the lift entirely.  The government (Army Corp of Engineers) could always restore it though, making use of the lift a requirement again.  When making any Real Estate purchases, I would advise making your decisions from the more pessimistic angle, so it doesn’t come as any surprise should they revise it.

Should you want the latest info and/or the details on any planned restoration, or to find out the lift’s capacity, you can call the City at 239-574-0401.

Four Mile Cove Boat Lift and Island Cove Lock:

UPDATE: The following lift has been removed by the city and no longer applies! The lock is now left in the open position and no longer applies as well!

Over in the SE side of town there is a lift at the end of Ottersrest Lane that serves only a few canals. Mainly, the neighborhood of Island Cove, a condo complex.  You can call the city at the # above for any specifics.

On the map below there is a lift noted just above Veterans Memorial Pkwy.  That lift no longer applies!  (It had previously served the Four mile cove / Ecopreserve neighborhood.) That location remained largely undeveloped until recent years, and now offers a very convenient location and a neighborhood of nice waterfront homes. Note that there is a bridge along the way out though (under Veterans Pkwy) with a height of 8’5” so boat size is limited in this neighborhood, but is perfectly fine for a 20 foot boat or so.

Update: these no longer apply
